A classic that never gets old
Tongits is a three-player rummy-style card game that started in the streets of the Philippines and grew into one of the country's most beloved pastimes. Whether you played it at a family reunion in Pangasinan or a friend's place in Taguig, chances are you already know the basics — draw, meld, and get rid of your cards before anyone else does.
What makes Tongits special is its pace. A single round can flip in seconds when someone declares or fights (tawag ng tong). There's strategy, bluffing, and a little bit of luck — the kind of mix that keeps you coming back for one more game.
At jlj9, we've taken that same energy and built a proper online lobby around it. You get matched with real opponents, can pick your stake level, and cash out through GCash or Maya the moment you're done playing. No extra steps, no waiting days for a payout.
Already a pro? Skip ahead. New players — this one's for you.
Each of the three players receives 12 cards from a standard 52-card deck. The player who deals gets 13. The remaining cards form the draw pile in the center.
On your turn, draw one card from the pile or pick up the top discard. Form sets (three or four cards of the same rank) or sequences (three or more consecutive cards in the same suit) and lay them face-up on the table.
You can "dump" a card onto an opponent's existing meld to reduce your hand. If someone calls a fight (sapaw), each player counts the total point value of remaining cards — lowest hand wins.
Run out of cards? Shout "Tongits!" — that's an automatic win for the round, no need for a fight. The game moves fast, so always keep an eye on what the other players are holding.
| Cards | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 point | Lowest in sequences |
| 2 – 9 | Face value | Most common melding cards |
| 10, J, Q, K | 10 points each | High-value "deadwood" |
Lower hand total = better position in a fight. Getting rid of face cards early is generally smart play.
Don't wait for a perfect hand before melding. Lay down whatever set or sequence you have early — it puts pressure on opponents and shrinks your deadwood count at the same time.
GCash, Maya, and more — jlj9 makes deposits and withdrawals easy for every Pinoy player.
Not all online Tongits platforms are built the same
There are a handful of online card rooms out there, but jlj9 was built specifically with Philippine players in mind. From the stake levels to the payment methods, everything here fits the way Pinoys actually play and spend.

Strategy matters — here's what the consistent winners do differently
Tongits is part skill, part reads, and yes, a bit of luck. But over hundreds of games at jlj9, patterns emerge. These are the habits that separate players who grind profits from those who just break even.
The discard pile is an information board. If a card you need has already been thrown twice, your meld path is likely blocked. Pivot early rather than chasing a broken set.
Waiting for four-of-a-kind when you could meld three is a trap. Lay down sets as soon as you have them. Reducing your hand size quickly gives you more flexibility on every future turn.
Dumping a card onto an opponent's meld isn't just about getting rid of deadwood — it can block them from extending that same meld. Think before you dump; sometimes it's better to discard to the pile.
When a fight looks likely, mentally estimate the other players' hand sizes. If someone has a small hand and you're carrying high-value cards, it might be worth burning a turn to dump rather than draw.
Going for the outright Tongits win is exciting, but if your opponents have already melded most of their cards, a low-count fight might actually score you more rounds across a session.
Smart play and fast cashouts — that's the jlj9 Tongits experience.
